We Need to Talk

Mishaps and misunderstanding drive the hijinks of this multi-couple rom-com from director David Serrano (Football Days and Una hora más en Canarias SFF10) and writer Diego San José (Spanish Affair 1 & 2 SFF15 & SFF16) but not too far under its farcical surface is the kind of contemporary commentary that makes We Need to Talk a surprising ‘layer cake’ of a film.

When Nuria (Michelle Jenner, Julieta) receives a proposal from her boyfriend, she faces a problem: the estranged husband, Jorge (Hugo Silva, My Big Night SFF16), who Nuria thinks has hit suicidal rock-bottom, may still be holding out hope that their marriage be rekindled. She tiptoes around her pending nuptials, trying to first raise Jorge’s spirits by saying she’s found him a job. But hiding her new boyfriend and even pretending her separated parents are together is definitely not the easy way out of this matrimonial dilemma.

We Need To Talk cleverly wrestles with ‘the big issues’ that are sweeping Spain, both political and economic, without miring its audience in a weighty cinematic experience. Given recent doom and gloom, and continuing debate around the GFC, this might be the kind of laugh that all of Europe has needed.
